However, a year ago, reports suggested that Hyperloop One, one of the front-runners, had effectively closed its doors, leaving many to conclude that the hyperloop was little more than pie-in-the-sky ambition. Recently, however, a small glimmer of hope has emerged from Switzerland, where a scaled-down prototype has sparked renewed interest in the hyperloop scheme.

In Lausanne, a 1/12th scale model of the hyperloop has emerged, and it recently completed what its developers have declared to be the “longest” test run of its kind. The small-scale test track stretches 120 meters in circumference and has delivered notable results, achieving a speed of 25.3 mph over a distance of 7.3 miles. While these results might appear modest compared to Musk’s grand projections, they represent essential data for engineers and researchers involved in the hyperloop project, especially as innovators refine their designs and strive for larger-scale implementations.

The project, aptly named LIMITLESS, encapsulates a range of advanced methodologies to assess and improve the hyperloop’s core subsystems, including propulsion and thermal management. This is not just academic footwork; every test potentially unravels critical insights that could lead to the success or failure of future hyperloop endeavors.

Despite these significant strides at a smaller scale, the hyperloop still faces enormous hurdles. The financial realities for many companies pursuing hyperloop technology have led to a string of failures. Investors have become wary of putting money into projects that seem mired in complexity and regulatory red tape. Critics often describe the hyperloop as a “utopian vision,” emphasizing that while the engineering problems may be surmountable, the economic viability remains questionable.

Moreover, with no operational full-scale systems anywhere in the world, the skepticism surrounding the project is understandable. Transportation authorities and urban planners will require substantial proof of the hyperloop’s feasibility — not only in terms of engineering but also regarding practical usability and return on investment.

The Swiss team’s willingness to push the hyperloop concept through real-world testing is noteworthy, even if just for a miniature model. Swisspod Technologies, in collaboration with local educational institutions, is demonstrating that innovation can find a foothold even in dire circumstances. The company is also committed to extending its testing capabilities, with plans for a broader testing ground currently under development in the United States, which may form the basis for future advancements in transportation.

As Swisspod’s CEO Denis Tudor aptly states, the company believes that these efforts are “key steps toward making hyperloop for passengers a reality.” The potential to change how humanity connects economically and socially is inherently appealing, but actualizing it will require both technological breakthroughs and financial backing.

The current trajectory of the hyperloop landscape might be contemplative, especially considering figures like Musk, who appears to have shifted his focus towards other ventures. Many ask whether the hyperloop will become a significant part of future transportation discussions or if it will be left alongside other speculative visions. The full-scale hyperloop remains a distant dream, and with various obstructions — both technical and economic — it’s vital to approach the subject with prudent optimism.

The testing conducted in Switzerland may just be the beginning. While the hyperloop is undeniably ambitious and fraught with challenges, it is still alive on a small scale.
